If you lose something at an LMCH community or find something that may belong to someone else, LMCH may be able to help.
This page explains what to do if an item is lost, found, valuable, or unsafe.
If you lost something
If you lost an item in your building or community, contact LMCH as soon as possible.
When asking about a lost item, please be ready to describe it in detail. This may include:
- What the item is
- Where you think you lost it
- When you last had it
- Any details that help confirm it belongs to you
For some items, LMCH may ask for proof of ownership before returning them. This is to help make sure items are returned to the right person.
If you found something
If you find an item that appears to be lost, please give it to LMCH staff if it is safe to do so.
Do not pick up or handle anything that seems unsafe, illegal, suspicious, or concerning. This includes items such as weapons, ammunition, drug-related items, unknown substances, or anything that could put you or others at risk.
If you find something unsafe or concerning, contact LMCH right away. LMCH staff will determine the appropriate next steps, which may include contacting the Community Safety Unit or police.
What happens to found items?
LMCH handles found items in two ways, depending on the type and estimated value of the item.
Lost & Found items
Items that are safe to store and are believed to be worth less than $500 may be kept in the building where they were found.
These items are placed in a secure Lost & Found storage area and recorded by LMCH staff.
Examples may include everyday personal items such as:
- Clothing
- Bags
- Keys
- Small household items
- Other lower-value belongings
Recovered items
Some items need to be handled more carefully. These are called recovered items.
Recovered items may include:
- Items believed to be worth $500 or more
- Identification
- Personal documents
- Cash over $5
- Electronics such as phones, tablets, or laptops
- Items that require proof of ownership before they can be returned
Recovered items are handled by LMCH’s Community Safety Unit and stored securely.
Items LMCH will not accept
LMCH will not collect, store, or accept items that are unsafe, illegal, suspicious, or inappropriate for storage.
LMCH also does not accept open food items.
If an item creates a safety concern, please do not touch it. Contact LMCH so the situation can be assessed safely.
How to claim an item
To claim a lost item, you will need to provide a clear description of the item. In some cases, you may also need to provide proof that the item belongs to you.
For example, LMCH may ask for:
- A detailed description
- Proof of ownership
- A receipt
- A serial number
- Identification
- Other details that confirm the item belongs to you
If the item is cash, you may be asked to describe the amount and any specific details about the bills or coins.
LMCH will only return an item once ownership has been confirmed.
How long are items kept?
Most Lost & Found items are kept for 30 days.
Higher-value or sensitive recovered items may be kept for up to 90 days.
After the holding period ends, unclaimed items may be donated, disposed of, or transferred to the appropriate authority, depending on the item.
